Saint Michael’s (Roman Catholic) Church is one of the most historical and beloved places of worship in Limerick City, holding deep roots as one of the original five historic parishes of the city. Located in the vibrant heart of Limerick city centre on Denmark Street, the church stands as an enduring testament to resilience, faith, and the city’s rich ecclesiastical heritage.
Following the destruction of the original medieval church during the 17th century, the present parish site was established between 1779 and 1781 during the Penal era. The church underwent a major rebuilding in 1881 under architect Martin Morris, taking on its striking Italianate and Romanesque Revival design. Renowned for its imposing limestone exterior, beautiful stained glass, and the iconic gilt statue of Saint Michael the Archangel vanquishing Satan crowning its roof. Originally known as the ‘chapel of statues’ because of the large numbers of statues inside, most of these statues were removed in the post-Vatican II years. The church has also hosted significant moments in Irish history - including political rallies addressed by the "Liberator," Daniel O'Connell.
For centuries, St. Michael’s has served as a central spiritual sanctuary for the people of Limerick, witnessing generations of sacraments, community gatherings, and quiet prayer in the midst of a bustling city centre.
